UNDERGRADUATE/GRADUATE INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY

AMERICAN CIVIL LIBERTIES UNION

The ACLU seeks an Undergraduate or Graduate Intern, or applicant with equivalent experience, in the Product & Technology Department of the ACLU's National office in New York, NY/Remote.

The ACLU's Product & Technology team partners with departments across the ACLU in order to build and maintain innovative, robust and secure digital products and technical systems that accelerate the ACLU's mission as our nationwide guardian of rights and liberties. We are a team of engineers, designers, product managers and administrators who take pride in creating technical solutions that help raise money, get our message out in the world, mobilize our supporters, and manage our data with integrity.

This product design internship will be an opportunity to contribute to the web and mobile experiences that drive audience engagement, action, and giving. They'll work with a cross-functional group of product managers, engineers, and designers to research, design, prototype, and deliver compelling digital experiences that help the broader public understand the work the ACLU is doing and understand how they can support it.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Research and synthesis of feedback from our constituents and stakeholders to make minor and major improvements on our products
  • Wireframes, mid to high fidelity visual and interaction designs, and prototypes for web and mobile aclu.org experiences
  • Commitment to making designs inclusive and accessible using best practices visual web design standards
  • Creating and sharing presentations highlighting the on-going work to our product and technology team and stakeholders across the organization
  • Engage in special projects and other duties as assigned
  • Center principles of equity, inclusion, and belonging in all work, embedding the values in program development, policy application, and organizational practices and processes
  • Demonstrate a commitment to the mission of the ACLU
  • Demonstrate a commitment to diversity within the office using a personal approach that values all individuals and respects differences in regards to race, ethnicity, age, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, religion, disability and socio-economic circumstance
  • Demonstrate a commitment to work collaboratively and respectfully toward resolving obstacles and/or conflicts

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS

This internship is primarily geared for new designers, current students, and folks transitioning into design from an adjacent discipline. Interns should possess the following:

  • Ability to create low and high-fidelity designs and user flows in Figma
  • Excellent collaboration and presentation skills
  • Familiarity with designing user-centered experiences for the web
  • Fluency with Figma, Sketch, or other design tools
  • Familiarity with brand guidelines / design systems
  • Knowledge of HTML, CSS, Javascript is a plus
  • A commitment to civil liberties, civil rights, and social justice
  • Commitment to the mission of the ACLU
  • Must work from a U.S. based location

INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW

  • Location: Our internship program offers a limited number of in-person, remote, or hybrid intern positions. This internship is remote or hybrid from our NY National office.
  • Time Commitment: This internship requires a full-time commitment of 35 hours hours per week.
  • Internship Duration: Full-time internships span 10 consecutive weeks beginning either January 16 or January 29, 2024.
  • Stipend: A stipend is available for those students who do not receive course credit and are lawfully authorized to work. Students who receive outside funding are eligible for a partial stipend to bring their total funding up to the level of ACLU's stipend amount for that term, if applicable. Arrangements can be made with educational institutions for work/study or course credit. Below is the stipend breakdown:
  • $20/hour for undergraduate students or equivalent experience and $24/hour for graduate and law students or equivalent experience

Priority Application Deadline: October 23, 2023.

Applications will be considered on a rolling basis and accepted until the position is filled, but priority review will be given to applications submitted on or before October 23, 2023.
