Summary

The UX/UI Designer is responsible for content deployment and maintenance, and application of user experience best practices on Communications and Marketing-owned websites. They will ensure that website pages display the intended content and functionality, and have strong visual impact. They will participate in front-end design and development and user research on evolving projects under the guidance of senior web team members. As a member of the team, this person performs a wide variety of web and digital duties to create highly-engaging and usable experiences for our audiences. They will work regularly in collaboration and partnership with almost everyone in the office, but at the same time exercise initiative and independent thinking to accomplish tasks.

Responsibilities*

60% Website Maintenance, Content and Governance


  • Build, deploy and maintain web pages for the College of Engineering Office of Communications & Marketing, both for the Michigan Engineering website and other websites and projects produced by C&M.
  • Regularly post content to College of Engineering websites and products, including news, stories, events and other information.
  • Contribute to the web group's efforts to specify, improve, and implement the look, feel, and function of online projects.
  • Maintain website quality by finding and correcting errors to content, broken links or other needed maintenance.
  • Deploy web content, including text, images, graphics, and other content types as appropriate within a variety of different systems, including the WordPress CMS
  • Provide recommendations and data-backed rationale for adding and removing content.
  • Provide guidance for maintaining up-to-date, accurate, and accessible content


20% Design and Development

  • Assess & consult on the reorganization of websites.
  • Applying post-launch protocols including preventing technical issues, improving the user experience, SEO monitoring and Accessibility testing.
  • Wireframing, prototyping, mockup new and updated elements with stakeholders
  • Develop pages and updates using HTML, CSS, and Javascript
  • Advise on accessibility and conduct empathic research for individuals
  • Test web products, functionality and features in development, and help troubleshoot issues that arise.
  • Assist with web content migration, ensuring accuracy and quality of content during transfer.


20% User Testing Research & Discovery

  • Conduct user research including card sorts, reverse card sorts, and moderated one-on-one user tests
  • Conduct discovery assessment, research, and goal meetings
  • Make design decisions that meet goals
  • Curate user personas, create user flow charts to enhance a users experience

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree or 3 years of equivalent experience
  • Experience with web design
  • Proficiency in visual communication
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud applications
  • Experience working with Figma or similar prototyping software to create visual elements of a product
  • Working knowledge of semantic HTML, CSS & Javascript
  • Experience with user research methods and tools

Work Locations

The Michigan Engineering Office of Communication & Marketing operates in a hybrid work environment consisting of both in-person and remote work. This position will be classified as a MOBILE position within the Michigan Engineering STARR classification matrix which means working on campus one day per week and working remotely the rest of the week.
