SUMMARY
Founded in 2015, the Hive’s mission is to drive engagement with the American public to raise awareness and address the needs of refugees through technology and data science innovations. The User Research Analyst is a core member of the Hive team to help understand how people use data vs what data products might look like. The Hive’s people-first data practices also include sharing data back with people, so that users have agency to use data for strategic decision making.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conduct primary and secondary user research by synthesizing existing qualitative and quantitative studies to provide actionable recommendations.
- Assist with market and landscape research to help position the Hive within the larger refugee context.
- Collaborate with the Hive team and broader refugee supporting ecosystem to understand business needs, and design research studies for user-focused insights.
- Create research insights aligned with user-centered design principles.
- Apply appropriate research techniques (such as user testing, field studies, group discussions, etc) for specific project requirements.
- Assist in participatory design research and engagement practices.
- Work with data analysts and data visualization experts to influence information sharing strategies within the organization and across the refugee-serving ecosystem.
- Share research insights to foster empathy for refugees.
- Communicate the Hive’s strategy through written, digital and visual presentations.
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of the Hive’s SharePoint site for organizational knowledge exchange.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
- 1-3 years of experience in user research, data analysis, information science or related field. Bachelor’s degree in an analytical discipline such as information science, cognitive science, human-computer interaction, user experience design, technical communications, behavior science, social science or other related field is preferred
- In lieu of education/degree requirements a successful candidate will:
- Have a portfolio of research work representing research that led to valuable insights or experiences, including research goals, methodologies, the process followed, your role, data visualizations, and articulated insights
- Ability to collaborate effectively with diverse teams and roles.
- Proactive mindset and willingness to take risks and learn from setbacks.
- Strong relationship-building skills and adaptability

- Familiarity with mixed methods research
- Exposure to data visualization or analysis tools, such as SQL, Python, R, Tableau, etc
- Understand design principles, such as data visualization and human-centered design.
- Knowledge of user-focused research techniques for product development
- Experience with agile, iterative development processes.
- Sound judgement and emotional intelligence when interacting with colleagues, peers, and vendors.

- Tasks involve some physical effort, i.e. some standing and walking, or frequent light lifting (5-10 lb.); minimal dexterity in the use of fingers, limbs, or body in the operation of office equipment; may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard.
- Extended periods of sitting at a workstation or desk and manual dexterity to work efficiently on computer keyboard for data entry and composing of documents
WORK LOCATION
Hybrid + Washington, DC + May also involve travel to some locations within the company’s region of operations and select donor locations.

$80,566 - $94,665
