User Experience (UX) Designer

Typical hours are Monday-Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Occasional work on evenings and weekends may be needed based on departmental needs.

Position Summary

This position will help NEMAC to develop prototypes and solutions using design research methods. The Science Information Designer | UX Designer will help NEMAC to understand the users and the usability of the tools through team collaboration, planning, user research, and interaction design. In addition, this position will also be expected to mentor NEMAC undergraduate research interns.

This position will work on applied research projects and interfaces to help facilitate decision making in a visual environment. Duties include the following points:

  • Help shape user-centric experiences and translate complex scientific concepts to a wide audience for NEMAC’s projects
  • Identify user needs and pain points by implementing user-centered methodologies.
  • Design and test user interfaces of different products
  • Working in a self-directed environment

Required Education/Experience/Skills

Master’s degree. May also consider a Bachelor’s degree and equivalent experience.


Preferred Education/Experience/Skills

  • Master’s degree in interactive design, human-computer interaction, or a related field. May also consider a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and equivalent experience.
  • 1-3 years of experience in UX design or related design role.
  • Proficiency in wireframing, prototyping, and mockup tools such as Figma and Adobe XD
  • Ability to research problems, communicate ideas and design improved user experiences.
  • Experience with research design utilizing various methods (i.e., user interviews, usability studies, surveys, etc.)


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of industry tools like Figma, Sketch, and Adobe XD.
  • Experience in visual design with programs such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, and Adobe Illustrator.
  • Strong facilitation skills with familiarity with facilitation methodologies.
  • Ability to understand and incorporate technical requirements into research.
  • Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines while managing multiple projects.
  • Communication skills and demonstrated ability to work as part of a team and delegate tasks as needed in project management.
  • Experience with supervising undergraduate students and managing student workplace experience.
  • Experience with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
  • Attention to detail.
