Our purpose at Changing Room is to move people towards more sustainable decisions, starting with the fashion industry. Changing Room aims to bring environmental transparency to the fashion industry by empowering consumers to make more sustainable purchases. We provide a solution where consumers can search and find second-hand, vintage, rental and upcycled options.

Changing Room is composed of dynamic and open-minded individuals that deeply care about making a positive change in the industry. We recently joined the Columbia Startup Lab and have WeWork offices in West SoHo, Manhattan. Changing Room was incubated through Columbia University’s Summer Startup Track 2020 and won the competition grant prize. We presented in the New York TechDay, the largest startup event in the U.S., acted as jury for the Global Circular Challenge at the London School of Economics. We’ll be giving a presentation at the University of Oxford May 2021.

Under the Covid-19 pandemic, our team currently operates remotely.

The role:

We are looking for a UX/UI Designer to help us build the product that consumers will find delightful and usable. Responsibilities include doing discovery activities around the problem space to uncover user goals and context, designing and testing prototypes to fit those needs, and finally helping the development team to materialize the solution. You have to be enrolled in an "industry project" credit-earning course accredited by a U.S. University to be eligible for this internship. We are also open to freelance work.

To be successful in this role, you should have experience with research methods (user interviews, contextual inquiries and other field studies methods) and also practice in prototyping of different fidelities. Also to have a growth mindset and never be scared to ask why. If you have a portfolio of professional design projects that includes work with web/mobile applications, we’d like to meet you. But we don’t want to see just eye candy. We expect transparency on the process behind your creative decisions. Great designers fall in love with problems not the solutions.

As a UX/UI Designer at Changing Room, you will:

Conduct user research activities and competitive analysis to be materialized in storyboards, user flows, wireframes, user journeys, sitemaps or other design artifacts.
Develop personas and usage scenarios
Prepare and present rough drafts to the internal team and key stakeholders.
Gather and evaluate user requirements in collaboration with a cross-functional team that includes front-end and back-end engineers, graphic designers.
Conduct Usability testing and make adjustments based on multiple feedback.
Identify and troubleshoot possible UX problems according to industry standards (such as expert reviews or cognitive walkthroughs)
Design graphic user interface elements, like menus, tabs and widgets.
Develop UI mockups and prototypes that clearly illustrate how sites function and look like to connect with the front-end and engineering teams.
Prepare demos for applying for crowdfunding and acceleration program opportunities

You’re great for this role if you have:

An understanding that design is how something works not only how something looks;
Proven work experience as a UX/UI Designer or similar design role;
Portfolio of product, services or communication design;
Knowledge of prototype and UI design tools (e.g. figma, framer, sketch, marvelapp);
Team spirit; strong communication skills to collaborate with various stakeholders;
Good time-management skills;
BSc in Design, Computer Science or relevant field.

Important:

Changing Room is an equal opportunity employer and we value diversity at our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, disability, or any other protected class.
