DESCRIPTION

UC San Diego Library's Digital Experience (DX) team collaborates across UC San Diego to improve the Library’s holistic digital experience for all learners, researchers, and Library staff. We engage with diverse campus communities in order to create inclusive, accessible, and empowering digital experiences. Our work spans a range of digital platforms, including the Library public website, UC Library Search, the LibApps suite, and technology in Library physical spaces and environments.

The Digital Experience team is a unit within the Library Technology and Digital Experience (TDX) program. TDX develops, implements, and supports sustainable, high-quality technology services and provides technical systems and solutions in support of all UC San Diego Library Programs and their associated strategic imperatives. To facilitate communication and coordination, the Technology and Digital Experience Service program aligns its service offerings with associated Library programs and provides technical and project management expertise as needed to support the objectives of those programs.

The Front End Developer and User Experience Designer is a central collaborator in the creation and improvement of the Library's digital environments and services. This role integrates user experience design and technical implementation, bringing key expertise in front end development to a team that is actively developing an overall approach to inclusive, user-centered, and accessible design.

As a coder, collaborator, designer, and communicator, this position takes a holistic approach to front end development and user experience design, working closely with the Digital Experience Manager, the Web Manager, the Digital User Experience Librarian, and a team of Undergraduate Student Design and User Experience Assistants in a highly engaged, team-based process.

This position will have ample opportunities to leverage front end frameworks to develop accessible and responsive digital experiences, improve the usability and design of the Library’s public websites, build digital experiences in support of research and learning, and cultivate new pathways for discovery and engagement with the Library's collections, spaces, and expert staff.

In bringing the DX team's digital projects to life, the Front End Developer and User Experience Designer:

  • Centers diverse users and user communities in the design, development, and continual improvement of digital environments and technology enhanced spaces and services;
  • Prioritizes inclusivity and accessibility in front end development and supports compliance with web accessibility standards and policies;
  • Works closely with designers and service leads to understand user requirements, articulate user stories, and develop solutions to meet the needs of all learners and researchers;
  • Translates designs and wireframes into high quality and well-documented code;
  • Evaluates and improves the quality and consistency of user interfaces and Library digital experiences;
  • Builds reusable components and front end libraries, writing the code for the Library's overall design system;
  • Serves as a mentor and guide for a team of future professionals who are building their experience with front-end software development.

The DX team takes an agile and collaborative approach to inclusive design. Our primary technologies include HTML, CSS (Bootstrap), and Javascript. We support a variety of content management systems, including Cascade CMS and the Springshare LibApps suite, as well as Ex Libris Primo VE as a discovery platform. Our work frequently involves collaboration across the Library, the UC San Diego campus, and the University of California system.

  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility. Experience with applying these concepts to front-end software design and development.
  • Experience with developing an advanced understanding of web accessibility standards, e.g., Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) and their application in front-end software development.
  • Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills. Strong intercultural competency and overall ability to communicate and collaborate with diverse teams and stakeholders both online and in-person, in one-on-one, small group, and large group settings. Effectiveness in synthesizing a variety of perspectives in order to identify viable approaches to complex challenges.
