Hello, we’re J5 Design. We are a team of designers, researchers and strategists driven by our purpose of using design to make the world a kinder, more beautiful place. To do this, we work with people in some of Canada’s largest public, private, and government organizations.
Sometimes this means guiding them to build a vision and strategy of where they want to go and how the world around them is changing. Other times we co-create new digital services. Or we cultivate their capacity to affect positive change through training, research, and community building.
Here are some J5 stories featuring some of the people we’ve gotten to know over the years: https://www.jfive.com/work.
What it's like working here
Surrounded by creative and friendly co-workers, you will have the opportunity to work on projects that make a difference for people and communities. We want joining J5 to be one of the best decisions that you make in your entire life!
- We are a team made of multidisciplinary people. Some of us are formally trained in design and some came into this work after studying and working in different spaces like healthcare, policy, business, the arts, and social work.
- We value learning. We have a whole Teams channel dedicated to it (and gardening, podcasts, and storytelling).
- We encourage experimentation and reflection. We work at a fast pace but acknowledge there are moments when we need to pause and/or pivot
- We are human and like to have fun. Our social committee is great at making us laugh and getting us together
The Opportunity: Design Internship
A design internship is full-time and typically 10-12 weeks, starting in June and running through August. You will work directly with J5 employees, clients, and partners in Calgary or Edmonton. Travel between offices may be required. We are a hybrid workplace that meets in-person, virtually, or make decisions on how to blend the two based on needs.
Key Responsibilities:
During your design internship, you will work closely with other J5 employees and your design lead to break down complex problems through design research, identify opportunities for solutions using a variety of methods including co-creating with clients and community members, and bring concepts to life using a blend of data and storytelling. What you can expect to do here:
- Create and execute design research plans: Articulating research and recruitment goals, conducting research using appropriate methods, and capturing and sharing back research results to both internal and external audiences.
- Flex your facilitation and collaboration skills: Producing workshops and co-design sessions for a variety of people with diverse backgrounds, including vulnerable or marginalized communities, fellow J5 employees and executive leadership.
- Strengthen your storytelling pipes and business knowledge: Creating concise and compelling design artefacts that illustrate results from design research and project activities, as well as presentations/videos/podcasts that share the story about what problem we are solving, why, and how.
- Support the growth of J5: Contributing to proposals for existing and potential partners, sharing knowledge and training in your area of expertise or interest, and participating in experiments that impact how we work (fun ones, like fail salons or grilled cheese club)
Experience and Qualifications
- We will expect you to display respect for others, to seek to learn from your peers, our clients and the wider world and to share what you know openly. Here are some other things that we value:
- Have interest, experience and knowledge about service and interaction design, methods and tools
- Be a student from an education institution in the areas of design or a related field
- Knowledgeable in design research, analysis and synthesis to identify insights and opportunities
- Experience with software like Sketch, Adobe Creative Suite or Figma is a plus
- Good at working in multidisciplinary teams, but happy to work independently too
- Strong in spoken, written and visual communication skills
- Capable to manage your own workload and flexible to adapt to changing demands
