We are on the lookout for a passionate and talented Design intern to boost our creative team, assist in innovative UX experiments, brainstorm and follow through with the hands-on-work that achieves the absolute best product and experience for our readers. You’ll excel at taking direction and integrating feedback, while also bringing your own invaluable ideas and opinions to the table.

Armed with a strong design sense, adept problem-solving skills, and an in-depth understanding of UX/UI principles, you're prepared to conquer any design challenge with enthusiasm. Proficiency in Adobe XD and Adobe Illustrator is a must. Drawing or illustration skills will be highly valued. You will learn, grow, and build an amazing portfolio with one of the top money publications online right now.

This role reports to the Art Director/Senior Designer and will be an important part of our creative and marketing department, increasing velocity and quality of output. Under guidance from our Art Director, the Junior Designer will support in designing and executing visually engaging solutions for the product which implement our new brand externally and internally. This role will achieve this by:

  • Taking ideas, wireframes, partial designs and running with them to create outstanding final designs, integrating feedback as they go
  • Being a liaison between the creative team and development team where needed
  • Participating in brainstorming sessions and offering up innovative ideas
  • Helping to build and maintain a design system
  • Taking on minor illustration tasks where needed

Responsibilities:

  • Work with autonomy to identify areas of the product ripe for design opportunities
  • Work with the Art Director’s guidance to collaborate in real time on designs files, seamlessly integrating your own creative solutions and feedback
  • Facilitate UX experiments across the product through detailed mockups
  • Take on various design tasks for our internal and external brand. This could include designing presentations, templates, office murals, merchandise, display ads, etc
  • Work with other departments to help make sure all pages are built to our thoughtfully crafted design specs
  • Research design inspiration, keeping up with the direction of new trends
  • Assist in maintaining consistent design and photography
  • Providing your input! We want to hear your creative ideas and opinions, you are not just another wacom tablet operator, you’re a valued collaborator.

Who should you be, ideally?

  • An enthusiastic and diligent learner
  • Completed or almost completed a degree or diploma in design (or similar field)
  • Has a stunning portfolio of work that shows off your visual design sense, ability to collaborate, and thoughtful approach to user flows and user experiences.
  • Someone who can balance making the ‘perfect design’ with realistic timelines
  • Outside-the-box thinking. We are looking to innovate, not simply replicate.
  • Think in user-first mindset, focused on optimizing engagement and usability
  • Able to receive feedback and constructive criticism well.
  • Organized - you name your layers! You name your files! You create libraries to manage colours and design assets.
  • Good at working between different programs, and understanding their strengths (eg vector vs raster)
  • Can sense the subtleties that differentiate and define a style
  • Possesses a “can do attitude”, and believes in finding solutions
  • Motivated, and able to work without significant supervision
  • A keyboard shortcut wizard
  • A clear communicator, able to articulate design specifications, technical and creative concepts
  • Able to come in to our Toronto office on occasion, though we are remote-first

What tools should you know?

  • You should have an in-depth understanding of UI design tools, primarily Adobe XD. We also sometimes use Figma.
  • You should be a pro at designing graphics in Adobe Illustrator. You should be familiar with all the main tools, including the pen tool.
  • You should be able to skillfully manipulate photos in Adobe Photoshop

Nice to have

  • Experience in Adobe Premiere, Adobe After Effects
  • Excellent drawing skills
  • Good at creating social media content

Why you should work for us

  • Truly top-tier benefits
  • Quarterly company-wide team building outings
  • Free in-office snacks
  • Company holidays (New Year’s Day, Good Friday, Victoria Day, Canada Day, Labour Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, Boxing Day)
  • On-Demand training and development courses
  • Enjoy flexible work hours while maintaining open communication during core business hours (9 AM - 5 PM) and committing to an 8-hour workday to foster collaboration and productivity.
