Intern
Doesn't Require College/University Enrollment
2024-05-01
3.4

Application deadline is May 15, 2024; any applications received after this time will be reviewed on an as-needed basis.

About the opportunity

  • The UX Research Internship has a tentative start date of June 15, 2024.
  • The internship will last for approximately 12 weeks (40 hours/week).
  • This position is not eligible for benefits.
  • This is a fully remote position that can be based anywhere in the United States. Many of our team members work in the Pacific Time Zone, so we do expect that your schedule will overlap for a few hours each day (e.g., Eastern Time Zone, Hawaii-Aleutian Time Zone).

Key responsibilities in this role

  • Collaborate with our UX team (one UX researcher and two UX designers) as well as product managers, data scientists, and software engineers.
  • Enable product managers to prioritize research questions and determine whether foundational and/or generative UX research is needed.
  • Gain stakeholder buy-in and provide regular updates as you design research plans, conduct research and analyze data to glean actionable insights. Potential projects would likely be focused on caregivers of K-12 students in the US, but research methods and deliverables depend on shifting business priorities and applicants’ interests, and could be qualitative or quantitative research methods that may include, but will not be limited to:
    • Run moderated usability tests of prototypes and prioritize next steps.
    • Conduct user interviews and design personas within a user segment.
    • Design surveys and analyze results to create a user journey map.
  • Use your storytelling skills to present insights in an engaging and persuasive manner.

About GreatSchools

GreatSchools is the leading nonprofit providing high-quality information that supports parents pursuing a great education for their child, schools striving for excellence, and communities working to diminish inequities in education. We are the only national organization that collects and analyzes data from all 51 state departments of education and the federal government to provide analysis, insights, and school quality ratings for parents, partners, researchers, and policymakers. Over 45 million users visit GreatSchools’ award-winning website annually to learn about schools in their area, explore research insights, and access thousands of free, evidence-based parenting resources to support their child’s learning and well-being. We are a mission-driven team that believes all children — especially those who have been historically underserved by the education system — deserve an excellent education.

Qualifications

  • 0-2 years of experience as a user researcher, market researcher, data scientist, etc. We are considering career switchers, boot camp participants, and alumni/current students of colleges or universities (associates, bachelor’s, master’s, etc.).
  • Deep understanding of the pros and cons of different UX research methods, even if you have only used a few different methods.
  • Portfolio (e.g., website, slide deck) showcasing 1-3 examples of how you have selected a UX research method to answer a question, then gathered and analyzed data in order to make recommendations.
  • Strong writing and storytelling skills so that you can advocate for users when speaking with stakeholders in order to create a quantifiable impact.

Nice-to-haves

  • Demonstrable passion for K-12 education, and/or experience as a teaching assistant, tutor, educator, etc.
  • Familiarity and experience using quantitative UX research methods (e.g., proficiency with R or Python for statistical analysis, interpreting web analytics on MixPanel or Google Analytics, data visualization with Excel or Tableau).
  • Strong track record of creating quantifiable impact during a previous internship or job, whether working on tasks that overlap with UX research (e.g., analyzing data, managing stakeholders) or in roles with less obvious connections.
  • Conversational proficiency in Spanish or other languages.

GreatSchools team members are diverse in all ways. We are committed to hiring talented staff who reflect the diversity of the communities and audiences we serve and who believe in supporting all parents, especially those who have been historically underserved. As a proud Equal Opportunity Employer, we are committed to considering applicants regardless of race, color, ancestry, national origin, religion, creed, age, disability (mental and physical), sex, gender (including pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding or related medical conditions) sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, medical condition, genetic information, marital status, military or veteran status,  or any other federal, state or local protected class.
